This epic saga is based on true events and recounts the tale of Gonzalo and his family and their persecution during the Cuban Revolution. It begins in Cuba, 1958, with Gonzalo happily managing his family’s sugar plantation unaware that his world, as he knows it, is about to end. Lieutenant Jimenez, Gonzalo’s childhood nemesis, is out to destroy Gonzalo with his new found government power. Gonzalo senses the impending disaster when Ricardo, Gonzalo’s longtime childhood friend, joins the rebel movement. The only bright spot in Gonzalo’s life is Eva, with whom he falls in love. But his happiness is shattered when the government confiscates his family’s lands. Trying to get back on their feet, Gonzalo and his brother start new business endeavors but each time they are thwarted by Jimenez. On one of these occasions, Gonzalo’s friend Carlito is taken away by Jimenez and within 3 hours is executed for treason. Gonzalo’s emotional roller-coaster continues: He witnesses his brother Luis getting snatched away by the rebels on the night of his marriage to Eva. Luis gets sentenced to 30 years for a crime he didn’t commit. Gonzalo decides to take matters into his own hands and conducts “anti-Castro” activities and his band of saboteurs gain notoriety. But it is short-lived as Gonzalo eventually ends up in prison. Ricardo, even though he is now part of the rebel government, decides to help his friend and breaks him out of prison. But Gonzalo does not want to leave the island: he will not let his brother rot in jail. Now a wanted man, Gonzalo hides out with Eva in an abandoned farm. But their luck runs out: Jimenez spots Eva during a trip to the market. He follows her to the farm and attacks her. Gonzalo arrives just in time to save Eva and beats Jimenez to within an inch of his life but against his better judgment, he lets Jimenez live. The race to escape from Cuba before Jimenez can catch him is now on. Can he and Eva evade capture? Can they get onto a so-called “Freedom Flight”? Does he have the paperwork necessary to get off the island? This hair-raising, eye-opening tale is based on a true story and will leave the audience emotionally drained, yet entertained and educated on what life was like for many Cubans in the late 50s and early 60s. Archangel currently owns the rights to this screenplay which was written by Rafael Gomez, Esq.—a Cuban-American, whose parents lived in Cuba during this period.
